Description
The recommended initial dose is 25 mcg per day. The daily dosage can then be increased up to 25 mcg every 1 or 2 weeks. The usual maintenance dose is 25 to 75 mcg per day. The rapid onset and dissipation of action of liothyronine sodium (T3), compared with levothyroxine sodium (T4), has led some clinicians to prefer its use in patients who may be more sensitive to the adverse effects of thyroid drugs. However, the wide fluctuations in serum T levels that follow its administration, and the possibility of more pronounced cardiovascular side effects, tend to outweigh the reported benefits.
